Event Based Layout | 2012 Project Life February and March

Hello Lovelies! Today I am sharing a layout from my 2012 Project Life album. My 2012 album really is a transition album, going from traditional scrapbooking and moving into pocket page, weekly documenting. This means that some of my layouts don’t have weekly photos, and in those cases I simply create an event-based layout. Have a peek at my process for these events in February and March of 2012. This layout was previously a part of In My Pocket Memory Keeping class, Volume 01. If you’d like to join us in the classroom, and see BRAND NEW process videos, check it out here.

There were two main stories for this spread: karate testing for Addison, and also I took the four kiddos to the zoo for the first time by myself. At this time they were still quite little – Natalie was five and Addison was nine, so it was a bit unnerving for me at the beginning. I love having these beautiful photos to document how we began blending our families and some of the challenges we tackled along the way.

For this layout I chose a Gossamer Blue Life Pages kit, this is the one from May 2017. Again I wanted neutrals on the left, and bright happy colors on the right. Pink is one of Addison’s favorite colors, so you will find that fun bright pink across the page!

I am absolutely in love with how this title card turned out! This was so simple: stamped title and date + two stars! On the 3×4 card underneath I also did a similar format: stamped sentiment and a tiny strip of washi tape. So simple and pretty.

For some reason or another, I think these are the only two times we photographed Addison’s karate experiences in the year 2012. So I felt it was super important to include these two layouts so he has memories of his classes. Notice how the photos really help tell these stories – the close up of his belt, the photo of him with his instructor, and the environment he was in. All of this was very important to us and to him at the time and I am so happy to record this!

For the right hand side, I am telling the story of the first time I took all four kids to the zoo by myself. I was definitely outnumbered, and in these early days it was a tiny bit overwhelming to try to take them somewhere alone. But on this day I did it and it was a success. We all had so much fun together!

Larkindesign An Event Based Layout | 2012 Project Life FebruaryOne concern with putting two events on the same spread is how to tie them together, especially if the colors of the photos don’t necessarily match? I have always had the approach that your products can tie seeming unrelated photos together, and this layout is a great example of that.

Larkindesign An Event Based Layout | 2012 Project Life February

Because I had already used these happy colors on the other side, this side flows really well into a more feminine layout. I still included some of the black and white elements, too, to tie it all together. Notice on most of the cards I added one very simple element. This keeps the layout simple and easy to complete. No hard decisions, no over-complicated embellishing here, but the end result is still a very pretty layout with a really great story!

I had one more opportunity for a 4×6 card at the bottom of this layout, and I made it quite monochromatic. The card itself featured a very simple yellow star wreath and I added text inside it using a puffy alphabet from Freckled Fawn. Then a simple date stamp and the card is complete.

I hope these layouts inspire you to try a more simple approach to your own layouts, especially in the name of not overwhelming yourself. Embellishing can be so much fun, and our pretty layers are so tempting to either hold onto them (read: hoarding) or over-use them. But you can see in this layout how a simple approach still allowed me to use my favorite things and actually get the layout done without feeling panicked. And most importantly, this keeps the emphasis on the important part: the story + the photo!

See you again soon!

An Event Based Project Life Layout | January 2012 Using Studio Calico Documenter Kit!!

Hello Lovelies! Today I am sharing a layout that was previously part of the In My Pocket Memory Keeping class, Volume 01. All of the content related to this class, plus my BRAND NEW process videos, can be seen in that class. Click here to join us!

The layout I am sharing today is an event based layout from January of 2012. There were two stories for this layout: Addison’s testing in karate and a Valentine’s Day Father/Daughter dance.

You will notice my photo placement in these layouts: the upper left hand and lower right hand corner pockets are available for journal cards, and the rest are filled with my 4×6 photos. Where I have 3×4 photos I alternate photo/journal card, so the layout is balanced. I almost always follow this formula in my pocket pages.

I decided to work with a Studio Calico kit in this layout, this is the Documenter kit from January 2017, Roman Holiday. I wanted a combination of boy-ish products for the karate photos plus girl-ish products for the dance layouts.

For the 3×4 cards I chose a good balance of journal cards and filler cards. Each of them is layered with all the good stuff – journaling, stamps, and ephemera. The Roman Holiday kit had some great ephemera and they were so easy to layer on top of the journal cards.

For the right hand side I began with a fun title card. I just had to use this floral card and then I layered one of the journal cards over top to provide a home base for the title itself. I also added just a few tiny stamps and a touch of washi tape.

Look how tiny the girls were! I think Natalie was just five and Emberlynn seven. They had the most adorable dresses from a now-out-of-business company called Naartjie and they were so excited to wear them. They definitely felt like princesses that night!

I kept the embellishing to a minimum on this layout, just adding a few ephemera to the photos. The gold foiled journal card stands beautifully on its own.

Lastly a journal card that sums up my personal feelings about their evening together at the dance. Journaling the past can feel like a challenge sometimes, but I always encourage my students in my classroom to journal about their feelings today, whether today is right after the event or years after the event.

December 2018 In A Travelers Notebook | Days 7 to 9 PLUS A Gift For You!!!!!

Hello lovelies, today I am sharing my process video for Days 07-09 in my December Travelers Notebook! You can view my process video below, and I will share a few photos from these days with you as well.

Day 07 was a day I had the back of a patterned paper and the star vellum to begin my layout with. I printed a full page photo, layered journaling and the date (elements from Sahlin Studio Home For the Holidays collection), and I added a simple star + word sentiment onto the vellum. My story was about how we had purchased our tree a week ago and the lights + ornaments sat on the living room floor for days before we could decorate!

December 2018 In A Travelers Notebook | Days 7 to 9 PLUS A Gift For You!!!!!

Day 08 was the back side of the star vellum and my foundation pages I had created, also using the Home For the Holidays kit. I wrote a little more about our delays in decorating (ha!) and included a photo of the family in the living room, this time with the lights on the tree. I changed out my number so it was the right day. I also added the red felt heart from Ali Edwards and a tiny chipboard piece from Paislee Press.

Day 09 was all about our record snow fall in NC. We had probably over 18″ here, and it was so cold I really didn’t go out in it very much! So I created a photo collage with the Larkindesign Photo Templates I designed. You can still grab those for free via this link here.

This layout included a page protector that I had sewn into my notebook, so for this day I added a gold polka dot vellum. To the vellum I adhered a wreath die cut from Crate Paper, and on the back I added the gold puffy wreath and my number. The bow and number are from Felicity Jane.

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for supporting Larkindesign and for being part of such an amazing community of creatives. This year has been a learning year for me, filled with lots of hard work behind the scenes, lots of tears, many wonderful friendships, and more determination going forward. I hope you will stay along for the ride, it’s going to be lots of fun.

To thank you I have created a free collection for you to help you tell your own stories from the month of December. This is a Traveler’s Notebook kit, a Embellishment kit, and a small collection of Journal Cards.

December Daily 2018 In A Travelers Notebook | Days 05 & 06

Larkindesign December Daily 2018 In A Travelers Notebook | Days 05 & 06

Hello Lovelies! Today I am sharing my Days 05 & 06 in my December Travelers Notebook! I will be sharing Days 03 & 04 very soon with you, as they are part of design team work I am submitting, so look for those days very soon. Of course you can find all of my videos from this project in the December Daily 2018 category. Check out my process video for today’s layouts here.

Day 05 was a somewhat frustrating day where nothing seemed to go right and it would have been easy to beat myself up and quite honestly hate on myself for not being perfect. And then my son missed his bus to get to his match for Academic League and I had the opportunity to show him extra love and compassion. I was reminded how we all need to show ourselves that same compassion when we mess up, and when things happen that are beyond our control. I began this page with one of the Larkindesign Travelers Notebook Photo Templates, which you are welcome to download here for your own projects for free!

Larkindesign Travelers Notebook Templates Vol 01 Mkt IMG

These templates make it so easy to type in your story, add a quick photo, and print. I actually used a photo from a few weeks ago, because the day was so crazy there was not much opportunity to take any photos. This is part of making the project work for you, right? Focus on the story and find a photo that supports your story well.

Larkindesign December Daily 2018 In A Travelers Notebook | Days 05 & 06

This layout had the star vellum transparency, which I believe is available at Michael’s or AC Moore. I love the back side which is white on white, so I added the number 5 in white on top. That number is from the Ali Edwards 2017 December Daily product offerings. I also added a tiny gold puffy star from Crate Paper Merry Days. The branch and tiny stars at the top of the photo repeat a tiny bit of gold on the layout. When you turn the vellum to the next page, the stars are gold, and the patterned paper is black on white from Merry Days as well. I have layered a Santa on top of the snowglobe/cloche puffy sticker. I love him so much!

Larkindesign December Daily 2018 In A Travelers Notebook | Days 05 & 06Day 06 was super quick and super simple. This is the center of my notebook so I used a full page photo and added a few digital elements before printing. One of the things in our family that brings me incredible joy is the relationship our two boys have. Nick and Addison are the best of friends and thin the world of each other. It always makes my heart skip a bit when I see them walking into their school together, chatting about all the things teenage boys chat about. So I snapped this photo quickly before leaving the drop off lane. I added my text in Photoshop along with the number six from the Sahlin Studio December Days No 04. The word strips are from Home For The Holidays. Once I adhered the layout into the notebook, I remembered I had some white stars from Ali Edwards, so I added those and the layout was complete.

Larkindesign December Daily 2018 In A Travelers Notebook | Days 05 & 06Thank you so much for following along with me today! See you again soon!
