This layout was created for the Sahlin Studio Creative Team, showcasing the Project Mouse Celebrate collection. I brought out all the pinks in the kit, and just used tiny touches of the other colors throughout the layout. I think you guys will love to know that I actually have borrowed these photos from their dad – we lost quite a few of our photos several months ago, and I don’t even really know how it happened. If you follow the Bermuda project you might have heard me talk about it there. These photos and all our Bermuda photos were lost in that time period. So I am really thankful that I had a back up source for these photos!

I began as always with the date card. The balloons are the only embellishment, and again I added my dates using alphabet stickers and a roller date stamp. Fast, consistent, easy decision making! I also utilized several of the journal cards that are available with the Celebrate kit. Lots of opportunities to add details here.

This is one excited girl, can you tell? I love how small she is here, and also her cousin, who is behind her, is now almost graduated from high school and driving. These photos are time capsules now. Notice I also added a white border to these photos. They are all a bit dark, admittedly, and white borders is an easy unobtrusive way to make the appearance that the photos aren’t so dark on the layout. Since these were photos I did not take, of course I didn’t have control over the white balance in the room, so brightening here was not the best option.

Hopefully you can see here how dark photos can still make a fantastic layout! Every one of these photos tells a story, and the colors in the journal cards make the layout visually interesting! Don’t be afraid to document those darker photos, ok? Once the layout is done, you will be so glad you did it.

Some of my embellishments for this layout are digital elements from the Celebrate kit. For texture and interest I also brought in some Elle’s Studio acrylic pieces, Freckled Fawn chipboard word strips, and the Amy Tangerine foam word title from Hustle & Heart. The wood pieces are also from Elle’s Studio.

For the right hand side I began with this title card. It’s very simple, again, with just the foam word, the cake digital element, and the word strip. I love the contrast of the white on top of the pink, don’t you?

The photo above may be one of my favorite photos of her ever. It captures how precocious she is, and how intently she was unwrapping these presents. I also think it is hilarious that she got a Nerf gun! These moments are amazing!

Even when sticking to my commitment to keep embellishing simple, I am still layering. The Happy Birthday card above is one of my favorites from the Celebrate collection, and it has all the colors in it. I layered a black and white element on top, and then a simple pink star on top of that. Layering done with contrast, but still simple and uncluttered. That bottom journal card is also a study in contrast, with black text on white background, and pink washi tape as lines. I adore the black and white with a pop of color.

It has been so much fun sharing my thoughts with you, about using supplies and how I use them in my layouts each week. See you next lesson!
