Hi everyone, today I wanted to share with you how I am doing my meal planning in a traveler’s notebook! I have been wanting to do this for a while because I want to accomplish two things: 1. I want to actually cook at home more often and make the decision making process easier; and 2. I want to actually prepare and eat the food we are buying! So take a look at how I have started.
Here is a look at some of the ways I have used this notebook to help with planning. I am using a silver glitter notebook from Webster’s Pages with inserts from Momenta.
I added a very simple library pocket from the Felicity Jane Heidi kit. This is a quick place to store coupons or other little slips of paper that I need throughout the month! The first insert is a calendar that I can keep in the kitchen. The calendar is the place where school schedules are kept, mainly so I can keep track of who to pick up when, and also so I know what days the kids have off. They also have half days here and there too. All of that lands in the calendar insert, and I love this insert because it allows space for a whole year!
This is how our basic meal plan looks each week. First I made a master list of all the meals we like to cook. It turned out to be about 14 meals! So I made these simple spreadsheets for two weeks worth of dinner meals and school meals. We pack lunches for four kids 2-3 days out of the week, and for two kids the rest of the week, and they pack them all themselves. This is a fantastic way to help them accomplish that and we love it. You can see I have made notes for the week shown, as we had to make a few last minute substitutions. That is so easy to do!
For the third insert, I have created our weekly grocery lists. Because I am very interested in actually preparing and eating the food we are buying, now when I prepare the grocery list I only have to look for the items I know are on the meal plan for that week. It has made our grocery trips much more efficient and less exhausting, because in the past we were just buying all the things! It was slightly insane!
Do you meal plan in your traveler’s notebook? This has overnight become my favorite and most useful notebook ever, and it is saving us money too! Link me up to your meal planning, I would love to see!
