Hi guys, today I am sharing another layout in my Things I Need to Hear Series. In this layout I am journaling a bit about carrying other people’s anger and how to move forward from that. I used one of my favorite mixed media techniques – creating patterns using floral stencils and modeling paste, and then painting with acrylics. I then embellished using some of the glorious Bloom collection by Maggie Holmes.
I find that every week when I complete these layouts I cannot wait to share them with you. I am loving this artistic process and combining mixed media with photos and journaling.
My journaling for this layout was, quite frankly, brutally honest and painful, but so much worth it to write it out and get it out of my brain. These are the kinds of journaling that absolutely can be covered up and be made into a portion of the artwork itself, which is what I did here. I layered modeling paste right over top of the words in a symbolic move to remind myself not to park in the negative spaces.
I then layered distress paints and acrylics over top, and a layer of gesso over top of that as well. Underneath my photos I layered some cut files I picked up from the Silhouette store: Totally Jamie floral cluster and leafy branches.
After that I layered my photos with patterned papers and my title. At the end of my journaling I left the invitation for myself to take charge and only own emotions that are mine to own. I admit I don’t really know what this looks like but I am already doing it and I am already working hard to make important changes in my life and self-awareness, so I wanted my title to be a reassurance to me that I do, indeed, have this. Change is always scary, but this is a very good thing. Disclaimer: as a survivor of trauma anger often becomes a coping mechanism for dealing with the reality of what happened to that person, and often trauma arises from the projection of other people’s anger onto the victim. This means that victims carry the anger of their perpetrator, often in the form of visible scars and always in the form of invisible, emotional scars. In prolonged trauma, the survivor is groomed to hold that anger and accept that anger because the perpetrator leads them to believe they deserve it. An important part of healing from trauma is identifying misplaced anger, and it is this type of anger that I am referring to in my video and layout.
