Kids Albums Project | Nicks First Day Of Seventh Grade

Hello Lovelies, today I am jumping back into the Kids Albums Project with a layout from Nick’s album all about his first day of Seventh Grade! If you would like to learn more about how I document the lives of our four children from Kindergarten to Senior Year, check out my class: In My Pocket Kids’ Album Edition! Follow along with my process below.

This layout began with the photos from the first day of school in 2016, which for Nick was his seventh grade year. I also pulled in a darling cut file from my friend Iris Fox, over at Whimsyfoxcrafts! I am so excited that she has opened her own Etsy shop and you may remember that Iris was also a contributor to In My Pocket Kids class, so it was just serendipitous.

I used a lime green card stock from Close To My Heart to cut the file, and then as I was finishing the layout I also decided to frame the layout with a second sheet. I am in love with this lime color and think it pops beautifully!

Check out the luscious details of this cut file! I have paired it with the Pretty Little Studio Chasing the Sun collection, which uses a bit of lime green along with other blues and yellows. Those became the basis for my color choices across the layout. As I went through the collection to pull elements and patterns, I purposely chose items that repeated those colors for a solid color story on the layout.

I had three photos, one of all four kiddos together, and two others of Nick outside the school. These all three tell specific stories: one of them and their relationship to each other, one of who Nick is and what he looks like right now, and another of his silly personality with the papers covering his face. These are all solid photo choices, if selecting photos is a challenge for you!

In my process video you saw me create the background before anything else, using some watercolor sticks from Windsor & Newton. I picked these up from Blick in Savannah (my absolute favorite artist supply store!) and loved using them. I recommend putting down the pigment onto scrap paper and then use your brush to put it onto your art work, as I did here. They created the most lovely muted background that draws your eye into the parts of the cut file, but doesn’t compete. The colors I used are: Sap Green #599, Turquoise #654, and Cadmium Yellow #109. I highly recommend these!

I tucked just a few tags and word strips around the photos, and added my journaling at the bottom of the layout. I added lines and stamped circles with a stamp set from Elle’s Studio using Black Archival ink, and then called it done. One more look at this fun piece!
