Light The Path Art Journal With Me | Dream On

Hi everyone and welcome to Art Journal With Me! Each Wednesday I share a layout from my art journal to inspire you to create an art journal page with a small amount of supplies and time. If you’d like to learn more about Light The Path, our creative project that incorporates creativity and healing, check it out here: Light The Path Workshop. To see more Art Journal layouts from our blog, follow this link here: Larkindesign Art Journals. Here is today’s layout, along with a process video you can find on our YouTube channel!

My idea for this layout came from the stencil, purchased a few weeks ago at Jerry’s ArtARama in Greensboro, NC. I wanted to do an ombre sort of effect, going light to dark on the page, so I grabbed some Jane Davenport watercolor brushes and got to work.

To start the page, and add a tiny bit of pattern underneath the stencil, I laid down some washi tape. This one is from Studio Calico. This will also protect the previous and future pages in the notebook, when working with mixed media.

I then mixed three shades of watercolor with my modeling paste. I used the colors called Jellyfish, Starfish, and Bluebottle from the Jane Davenport collection, and since the lightest color was more purple I decided to blend the other two to create a medium and darker shade of purple as well. It’s so satisfying to mix colors!

After the colors are mixed, it is time to apply the paste to the page. I started at the top with the lightest shade, and worked my way down the page with medium shade, then darkest shade. When I raised up the stencil, this is what I had.

I felt a little like the upper left corner was bare, as if the design of the page just fell off the page somehow, so I mixed a little more of the Jellyfish color with gesso and painted that along those two edges. I also touched a bit on top of the stenciled part, not too much. But this helped the design to pop a bit more and maintains that top butterfly’s shape a bit. It also establishes a solid border for the page.

Then, once the gesso was dry, I added my stamping. I have used the Dream On stamp set from Pinkfresh Studio, which is a rather old set but still a favorite of mine.
