Light The Path Art Journal With Me | New Dina Wakley Black Art Journal

Hello friends! Today I have something really cool and totally out of my comfort zone to share with you! I picked up the Dina Wakley black art journal and decided that this would be a great opportunity to do art that is completely different from any previous art I have ever done before. As you all know, my art pages are typically pretty white and airy and, well, starting on a black base is the complete opposite for me. You are going to want to try this too, when you see how cool it turned out. If you’d like to see my (previously seriously white-washed) art pages, check out the link here: Art Journal With Me. So come follow along with my process for today!

Working on black pages means using slightly different art mediums, so I also picked up some of the Lindy’s Magical Shakers. These stunners have rocked my little art world, I gotta tell you! They are so well pigmented and can be mixed up with anything you have, so I chose to mix them with my Liquitext modeling paste. A stencil is a fun place to start, right? These are the Lindy’s Magical Shakers I have used: Cathedral Pines Green, Polka Purple, Time Travel Teal, and Alpine Ice Rose.

I had this great floral stencil from TCW and thought I would mask parts of it off to create my page design. My idea was to leave space in the center for my words, so I made sort of waves. You can use washi tape for this, or masking tape.

I mixed up each color and used them each one at a time, moving my way around the page. I did wash the stencil in between most of the applications of modeling paste, just to be sure that the stencil would last. It worked great and I loved the end result!

This is what my page looked like once the design was laid down. I was absolutely amazed at how beautifully the Shakers pop against the black page! They have a mermaid feel to them! Just one thing I would do different: when you get into the center where your two pages meet, fade out your modeling paste so it doesn’t get clogged up in the page gutter. Also, try to change your colors in the center of the stencil. It will make the blending work a bit better.

Once all that was completely dry, it was time to add the pen. I wrote a bit about change on this piece, just thinking a bit about how hard change is, but it is so necessary to keep us moving forward as a species. We are learning and growing and ever evolving, and we are allowed to be messy and complicated in all of that. I used a simple Jelly Roll pen, which also worked perfect against the black page. This is so much fun to discover new products and new effects in mixed media.

Change is here, my lovely friends, but I hope you are able to see that change is good. Thanks so much for joining me today! See you again soon!
